Hey, the idea of using this headline was ONLY & ONLY to get your attention.

I know you probably get a lot of links from your fans on social media every day, but I thought I would chip in as I’d really love to give you few great tips on the subject line of your emails.

And now that I have your attention let me quickly give you the best tip for email marketing.

Best tip?

YES, because it is the first step of getting people open your email.

The only thing that matters in the subject line is “Open this email.” That’s really the essence of what it is.

That’s the naked truth of what you want that subject line to say. And you probably get more people to open an email that said, “Open this email,” than some of the subject lines that we see. Right?

Alrighty. Let’s start.

When you’re planning an email marketing campaign, you can follow a super simple process every single time.

It will help you get the recipient open your email.

Here it is:

1) Putting somebody’s name is MAGICAL. I know this is common but is not used to incorporate point 2 & 3

2) Continue conversation like you do, like a salesman would do in real-life, not as marketers.

3) And the most important part, Don’t talk to the audience, talk to one. People read their email alone. It’s very intimate communication.

Come to think about it. Nobody is like, “Hey, everybody, let’s gather around and check my email.” That’s not the way people do email. They don’t check it in a group.

I asked people in my #ClickToCash FB group a question on the best subject line for a case.

Case:

If you are doing a workshop say “Master Facebook Advertising in 6 hrs” on weekend and it’s FREE.
You are asked to do an email campaign for registrations.
What subject line will you use?

Here are some of the responses

  • Puzzled with FaceboAdvertising? Be a master in 6 hours flat !!!
  • Master Facebook Advertising this weekend and save millions on your advertising budget !!!
  • Stop bleeding on your Facebook Advertising Budget. Be a master in 6 hours and save millions !!!
  • Why pay the Gurus when you can be a master in Facebook Advertising this weekend !!!
  • Make this weekend worthy by learning all tricks to master Facebook advertising in 6hrs.
  •  Be facebook advertising expert in just 6hrs.
  • {name}, sharpen your facebook advertising skills for Free.

Now, in my opinion, the problem with most of these headlines is ‘trying to sell the steak’ like every other marketer. Not unless I was praying for a free course on Facebook marketing for last 3 Thursdays to all the Gods in the world I will be excited to get this email.

So what do you do?

Here’s an idea for subject line

Sender: Amar (Personal) Sub: “{Name}, what are you doing this weekend?”

Now, this comes as any other personal email I have received in past few days from my acquaintances, friends, relatives and has high chances of open or for that matter the headline of this blog post ” I called. You didn’t answer. Now open this email quickly” if you want to create an urgency for filling up seats for your weekend workshop as it’s limited to 9 people.

You can try putting all these headlines including mine or yours in this cool EVM index tool to know the EMV (Emotional Marketing Value) and one I suggested has EMV of 71%

Now for the knowledge, most professional copywriters’ headlines will have 30%-40% EMV Words in their headlines, while the most gifted copywriters will have 50%-75% EMV words in headlines.

And the good news is that you too can have this gift by just thinking, observing and reading the right stuff. 99% blog posts on the internet are crap or at least not worth the time.

Now this same line can’t be and shouldn’t be applied to all email campaigns and soon people will know. You got to be creative with your ideas & be micro-personal. I think that’s the trick.

Let me give you some more examples?

Another Golden rule I stick to in some cases is ” make sure you are helping the recipient make more money through your subject line ”  works like charm in B2B as well.

So when I am sending an email to an educational institute or a restaurant for selling my services my subject line goes like

Sub: “Do you need students enrollments for session 2018 batch? ”

Sub: “Do you do birthday parties?”

Instead of selling my services. Always Give. Always add value.

The great thing about these email headlines is they usually get a response which is great because you have already started engagement and it passes through even the admin or front desk because let’s agree every employee is supposed to bring in more $$ 😉

So this will get you trough hurdle 1 “open this email”. Hurdle 2 is to make people read your email content and expecting-a-reply, knowing that the only purpose of the email is to get a response. You’ve got to know what it is that you want somebody to do when they read your email. What’s the purpose of it? Is it just to deliver information? That’s fine. It doesn’t really matter how you do that. Send that out.

But when you want a response, you’ve got to realize and understand what the response is. The 2 most likely responses are to either reply to this email or click on this link. That’s really the bottom line. That’s what we’re trying to get somebody to do, to take an action.

Both of those are great. The thing about getting a reply is that you can now engage in a dialogue with people, and there are so many, many ways to use this.

Like I use one killer technique to get my cold leads engage in conversation and converting them into clients. More about these tricks some other time. For now, just make sure your subject lines in emails are “Finger C’licking Good”

    Wow ! This post is really an eye opener. The reality shown in this post challenged my knowledge and proved that what I knew regarding email marketing was incorrect even at the basic level as deciding on the subject line of the email. Now that I have read this post, I would never make similar mistakes in future. Thank you for such a useful post.

      Thanks, Nelay. Everything has a purpose, if we marketers stick to it we will get mind-blowing results, always. Like the purpose of subject line is to only make sure people click and read the email content.

    That indeed was a good post and a good analysis of how things actually work. While SM is on the growth, for B2B, emails are still the best way to get response. going to use your tips in our next emails for sure.
